Drum Kit Hire - Reading

Make that first impression count.

So the studio is booked and final rehearsals have taken place, and soon you are going to enter the recording studio to lay down some beats to get your music out into the big wide world but wait, is your drum kit up to the task? after all, you’ve taken time to choose the right studio and have prepared meticulously for the recording so it would be a shame for your kit not to give you the sound you had envisaged. Sure the engineer can pull a few strings out of the bag… or desk! but nothing can compete with that raw, fundamental drum tone that your kit will ultimately give.

Clear crisp tones.

You may look at your drum kit and think it looks fine to record on but if your drumheads are worn or the drums themselves are of a lesser quality you can easily run into problems.

Producers are always looking for clean transients when it comes to the individual hits that the drummer makes - this, in turn, will result in clean drum fills and consistency in sound, and, as I am reliably informed by a friend who is producer, it makes their lives much easier during the mixing process… as well as a drummer who can play competently to a click!

There are drum kits out there that will handle the recording process better than others - no doubt about it and drums that are made from Birch tend to gain high regard with music producers for their shorter decay and slightly sharper tone. Don’t get me wrong, Maple kits are fantastic too but they will produce a livelier sound which in a studio environment can be harder to control.

The king of the studio - the Yamaha Recording Custom.

There is a reason why Yamaha’s Recording Custom drum kit has gained legendary status in the drumming community because they are quite simply brilliant within the studio environment. It’s a bold statement but no surprise that Yamaha claim it is the world’s most recorded drum kit to date, and from the evidence that I have, having spent lots of time with the kit - I have absolutely no reason to doubt this.

Yamaha Recording Custom

The Recording Custom drum kit is made of Birch that gives a lower tone and a shorter decay as opposed to Maple and is the reason it is so well suited to the studio.

Yamaha recently updated the Recording Custom in partnership with drum legend Steve Gadd has got it sounding better than ever. Each drum features a thirty-degree bearing edge and the weight of the lugs has increased to add more mass to the drum shell giving it that wonderful focussed sound. These drums sing! I have never played on such a tuneful kit and I have no biased to any company. The stick definition is clear which is useful if you play a lot of fast notes and the bass drum thumps hard.

The Recording Custom put simply is a fantastic drum kit - it’s easy to tune, has a great sound, and is built to the high standards that you would come to expect from Yamaha. We love it and think you will too!
